Betty Mcewan

ELIZABETH (BETTY) WILSON FARRAR McEWAN  passed away June 30, 2022 in Orlando, FL. Born April 19, 1925 in Griffin, GA to Irene and Thomas Wilson, she was a gifted student who entered Mercer University in Macon at age 16. She was a fifth generation graduate of Emory University in Atlanta, where she earned her Master’s in Biochemistry. There, she received the Annual Research Citation, her papers were published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation and she was later inducted into the Society of Corpus Aurum. Following graduation she continued doing cancer research at the University of Michigan’s Dept. of Pharmacology. In 1947 Betty married Dr. Edward L. Farrar, Jr., and they moved to Orlando in 1955. In addition to bringing up their four children, she volunteered as a Pink Lady at Orange Memorial Hospital, was a 45-year member of The Rosalind Club, a member of the Country Club of Orlando and was active with the Colonial Dames of America. A dedicated member of the Cathedral Church of St. Luke, she served as a Lay Eucharist Minister, Chapter member, and Chalice Bearer, and belonged to the Altar Guild, Order of St. Luke’s, and the Wednesday Night Cooking Team. Betty was a woman of grace, an enthusiastic rose gardener and avid fisherwoman, a devoted parent and a steadfast friend to many, who is remembered as a loving, nurturing, optimistic, resilient and remarkable human being. Betty was predeceased by her husband of 20 years, O. B. McEwan, and her son, Dr. Edward L. Farrar, III. She is survived by her son, Robert W. Farrar (Jodi) of Atlanta; her daughter, Marcia Farrar Girdley (Rick) of Orlando; her son, Douglas E. Farrar (Kae) of Merritt Island; her grandchildren, Tyler Farrar, Fletcher Farrar and their mother Cindy Farrar; R. Conner Girdley, III; Jordan W. Girdley; Elizabeth G. Laidlaw; Corina Farrar; Chanda Farrar and seven great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 24 at the Cathedral Church of St. Luke, 130 N. Magnolia Ave., Orlando, FL 32801 with a reception following at the Great Hall. In lieu of flowers, gifts to the Cathedral Church of St. Luke may be made in her name.
