Douglas Batten

October 4, 1929 - February 28, 2021

Douglas Batten, 91, died peacefully on February 28, 2021 following a month of suffering with COVID-19.  He was surrounded by his family and welcomed into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in heaven.

Doug was born in Pierce, Florida and was the youngest of eight children. When Doug was in high school, his family moved to Detroit, Michigan where he met Doris Marion Franz and married her shortly after graduation on June 2, 1950. They had two children, Dale and Donna.  In 1960, sick of the “mush and slush” of the winter weather, they moved to Orlando, Florida, at the time a sleepy little pre-Walt Disney town.  Doug worked for various insurance companies and eventually became a vice president at Loyal American and was transferred to Fort Lauderdale in 1970.  Eventually growing tired of the insurance industry, Doug had a mid-life career change finding his passion for real estate. He went to school to become an agent and then a broker. His love for real estate lead to Doris joining the real estate business as well. Doug and Doris teamed up and worked together until she passed away of breast cancer in 1992. They were lovingly married for 42 years. Doug continued his work in real estate, closing on his last house three days before his passing.

In the autumn of his life, Doug met and married the second love of his life, Betty Hoffman on November 1, 2013.  Doug and Betty immensely enjoyed the last 7 years of his life. Betty was a devoted wife and they had the best time doing life together. Doug deeply loved her. They moved from Orlando to New Smyrna Beach in 2018.

Doug will be lovingly remembered by those who knew him for his sense of humor, his strong work ethic, his generosity toward others, and for his desire to provide the best to all of us.

In his 91 years, Doug enjoyed travel, loved to eat, cherished his time with family and grew stronger and stronger in his faith.

Doug was proceeded in death by his parents, John Wesley and Dora Douglas Batten; his siblings, Genevieve Smith (Robert), Virginia Ellis (William), Ellouise Kowalsky (Robert), Juanita Myers (William), Williford Batten, John Wesley Batten Jr. (Ardith), and Alfrieda Clifford (Richard). Doug is survived by his wife Betty Hoffman Batten; his son, Dale Batten (Susan); his daughter, Donna Love (Philip); his six grandchildren:  Justin Baker (Mary), Christopher Baker (Mary Bradlee), Timothy Love (Laura), Erin Taylor (Nathan), Matthew Love (Jordan), and David Batten; his eleven great grandchildren:  Aubrey James, Gifty, Mary Lillian, Samuel, Philip, Ruby, Mary Adaline, Lucy, Charlotte, Ruth, and Oliver; his five stepsons:  Gary, Larry, Paul, Jackie, and David Hoffman along with their families; and his many nieces and nephews.

Doug had several ministries close to his heart that include his church, Child Evangelism Fellowship and Larry McFadden Ministries.  In lieu of flowers, his family requests that donations be made to Larry McFadden Ministries, P.O. Box 783516, Winter Garden, Florida, 34778.
